What are The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®

The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® are a form of external, non-invasive physical manipulation that use only the therapist's hands to bring internal organs into proper alignment, thereby improving the flow of blood, lymph, nerves and chi in the body. Arvigo® Therapy is based on ancient Mayan techniques of abdominal massage that have been practiced by traditional healers, midwives and shamans for thousands of years in the therapeutic treatment of the reproductive, digestive, and urinary systems.

While Arvigo® Therapy does not outright cure disease, it does work to remove the obstructions and deterrents to the body's innate healing forces. By alleviating congestion in the abdomen and pelvis and returning organs to their proper place, the vital flow of fluids and energy to nourish and repair the organs and systems begin to naturally occur. This, in turn, helps to prevent the progression of symptoms to more chronic disease states. In essence, Arvigo® Therapy gets to the root structural causes of imbalance and disease in the body.

What can I expect during a session?

At your first session, Amanda will review your health history and ask you about any pre-existing conditions or contraindications that may alter the format of the therapy. During the therapy, she will work on the front side of your body, from under the ribs down to the top of the pubic bone, and on the back side of the body, from the neck down to the tailbone. Arvigo® Therapy should not be painful, but you may experience some therapeutic discomfort during the session. The abdomen and pelvis are areas on our bodies that receive little attention, so the first few times you receive deep, therapeutic work, you may experience some new bodily sensations and feelings or discomfort in places you haven't experienced before. In general, these are positive signs that the therapy is working and that the body is coming into a space of greater balance and healing.

During the session you will learn the basic Self Care Techniques so that you can continue with your own healing at home. This is the hallmark of the therapy - putting healing back into the hands of our clients. For many, this is the first time a health care practitioner has given them a way to truly care for themselves between visits. Clients often report feeling deeply empowered and finding a new appreciation for the healing capabilities of their bodies through the simple act of daily self massage.

Amanda may also talk to you about adjunct therapies including herbal remedies, castor oil packs, faja use (especially for the prolapsed uterus), vaginal steams, penile soaks, hydrotherapy, nutritional changes, lifestyle changes (such as exercise and meditation) or flower essence therapy.

How often should I receive treatments?

In general, it is recommended to see a Practitioner about once a month for 3 months initially. Depending on your symptoms and the severity of the condition you are seeking to treat, more frequent sessions may be suggested. However, the most improvement will be seen by practicing the Self Care Techniques on a regular basis. Once per day is ideal. Many clients find this a manageable goal, since the Self Care Techniques take only about 5-10 minutes to complete.

How can Arvigo® Therapy work alongside herbal protocols and dietary changes?

The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® can be an excellent ally with other systems of healing, particularly herbal and nutritional therapeutics. Arvigo® Therapy works to address the underlying structural issues of imbalance and disease. Again, by removing physical obstacles to cure and improving the various systems of flow in the body (blood, lymph, nerve, chi), this opens the door for the body's innate healing forces to step in. This, in turn, often helps other therapies to be more effective.

For example, let's say someone is struggling with painful periods due to a displaced uterus. The uterus is lying on blood vessels, thereby affecting blood flow to and from the pelvis, lymphatic drainage, as well as nerve communication. The pelvis becomes congested, lacks adequate blood supply, and is burdened by the build up of metabolic wastes. If we give this person herbs to help with the pain, we are only providing symptomatic relief and not addressing the underlying structural issues. Though the herbs may help with the pain, the root cause of the imbalance (the displaced uterus) has not been addressed, potentially setting the client up for long term chronic disease.

Arvigo® Therapy works best as part of a comprehensive health protocol. Sometimes, Arvigo® Therapy could be used similarly to the pain herbs mentioned in the example above. Let's say someone is struggling with chronic digestive issues, yet the root of their issue lies in regular consumption of a food intolerance. Arvigo® Therapy may provide some symptomatic relief and may also help to address underlying structural concerns related to digestive system health. However, if the food in question is not removed from the diet, the person will continue to experience systemic inflammation and digestive disturbance, potentially setting the client up for long term chronic disease.

So, using The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® in conjunction with herbal and dietary protocols offers the client the best opportunity for a comprehensive and beneficial health plan.
